Black Torch is a supernatural action manga by Tsuyoshi Takaki that tells the story of Jiro Azuma, a teenager descended from a ninja (shinobi) clan who possesses the rare ability to speak with and understand animals.
His life changes completely after he rescues a mysterious black cat named Rago in the forest. It turns out that Rago is no ordinary cat, but a legendary mononoke (demon spirit) known as the Black Star of Calamity.
When attacked by an evil spirit hunting Rago, Jiro is severely injured and nearly killed. To save Jiro’s life, Rago sacrificed himself by possessing Jiro and merging his soul with Jiro’s.
This event granted Jiro extraordinary powers, but also dragged him into a secret conflict between humanity and the mononoke. He was eventually recruited by the Intelligence Bureau, a secret agency that harnesses the power of shinobi to protect the world.
